The transition from stage to live streaming may have been a little easier for Lyn Koonce than some musicians.  After all, in addition to songwriting, recording and performing live, Lyn has been teaching guitar and vocals online for years.

Here 5 Things she’s leaned about live streaming.

1) The most important thing for me is that the audio must be clear and loud enough – people can forgive a subpar or somewhat blurry video but will tune out almost immediately if the audio is bad. Also, you don’t need expensive equipment. Hi-speed internet and good sound are paramount.

2) Positioning is key. If it’s Facebook Live and you want to engage with the audience who comments, keep the camera at about eye level/straight on so as not to get a view of underneath your chin or too much of your ceiling (fan). I find I’m easily distracted if the musician’s video/environment is messy. I like a clean and cool vibe.

3) I like it most when singers are themselves, smile and are having fun. I’ve learned that the presentation doesn’t have to be perfect and mistakes make you seem human. Keep it moving.

4) Regarding Facebook: If you’re going to live stream from a venue or business, don’t also stream the same show from your own page unless you’re willing to split your audience.

5) I have found that posting a teaser about the upcoming live stream 15-30 minutes prior is helpful to remind folks.
