Five Things I’ve Learned About Live Streaming: Marielle Kraft
This is the first in a new series of artists sharing Five Things I’ve Learned About Live Streaming.
In the brave new world of music live streaming, indie singer-songwriter Marielle Kraft is a veteran.
She has been doing semi-regular regular live streams ever since the coronavirus lockdown began two months ago. Along the way, she’s learned some basic but important lessons.
1. Don't be late!
And start playing right away. Your fanbase becomes more punctual as they realize they're missing out on content when they're showing up a few minutes late.
2. Commit to treating the online concerts like the real deal.
Promoting the shows like a true concert with promo posters and a setlist and rehearsal time makes it feel legitimate for fans, and raises you to a higher standard, too.
3. Pin your donation links
As a comment or in the video description so everyone can refer to them throughout the concert. If you make a poster of the links to have in the background of your video, make sure the text is ~mirrored~ or else it will look backward to the viewers.
4. Give people a reason to tune in.
Are you debuting a new song? Do you have a special guest? Will you be doing an exclusive giveaway? Make it specific and exciting.
5. Balance the “talking about your situation” with actually performing songs.
At the end of the day, people are tuned in because they love your music and want to support you. Keep the focus on the music, while gracefully plugging your donation links after every few songs.
