What the ‘return to live’ means for artists

Earlier this week, we shared a landmark new study published by leading music research consultants MIDiA Research using data from our 80M registered users–one of the first studies in the post-pandemic era to document the ongoing resurgence of live music.

The study painted an inspiring picture for the future of live music, which got us thinking about how artists can make the most of Bandsintown tools for artists to best position themselves for success as the landscape continues to change.

Clearly the fans are out there, and they’re as hungry as ever for live music experiences, so let’s review a couple of the juicier bits and look at some of the ways Bandsintown for Artists can help you reach new fans, drive ticket sales, and more.

Insight → Live music will continue to grow

The overarching takeaway from the survey was that the return of live music hasn’t peaked yet, with 39% of fans saying they’ll attend more shows this year and 44% even willing to fly to see their favorite artist perform if they can’t catch them locally.

Pro tip → Keep your listings current

Make sure your artist page is up-to-date with all of your upcoming shows, add your free Smart Link to your social media bios to easily display your tour dates, and create a custom Event Widget to automatically sync your listings to your website. Insight → Most live careers begin online

In the past, it was necessary for artists to log countless hours on grueling tours, breaking even or even losing money, in order to develop a fanbase. Today’s survey confirms that most fanbases are being established online, with fans increasingly able to sample artists’ music from around the world.

Fans overwhelmingly indicated pre-existing fandom of an artist as far-and-away the driving factor behind them attending a show, as opposed to attending a show in order to try and discover new artists. When asked what motivates them most to buy tickets, 88% responded along the lines of “it was my favourite artist — I could not miss it” while only a quarter of fans are most motivated by the desire to see an artist for the first time.
